Salaried workers and pensioners in Greece who have IKA are entitled to receive pharmaceuticals at no cost if a doctor has prescribed them. In some cases, natural remedies, vitamins and other nutritional supplements may be covered.

What to do

1. Call and make an appointment with an IKA doctor

2. Make certain your IKA health book (Βιβλιάριο Υγείας) accurately reflects the amount of ensima you earned and bring the book to the appointment as proof you have coverage

3. Discuss your symptoms and needs

4. Get a written prescription, signed and stamped by the doctor

5. Take identification (tautotita or passport), the prescription and your IKA health book (Βιβλιάριο Υγείας) to a pharmacy and present them

6. The pharmacist takes your paper, dispenses and explains your prescription, perhaps has you sign a log. You pay nothing.

Why many people don’t bother

- Many people are uninformed about who to call and what to do

- Adept, experienced pharmacists can often diagnose symptoms and make informed recommendations

- Medication is often inexpensive and easily obtained over-the-counter without a prescription

- Too much trouble: By the time an appointment is set, many symptoms pass or get worse; some people are unable to transport themselves or take time off from work; sometimes it’s just laziness.

* It is imperative you consult experienced medical professionals in treating any illness. Until you are well informed and able to distinguish what pharmacists are reliable and highly experienced, it is recommended you see a doctor. Your health is precious and not worth endangering at all costs.

What’s the difference?

In Greece, IKEA is a Swedish furniture store and IKA (Ιδρυμα Kοινωνικών Aσφαλίσεων) is a social insurance fund that provides for pensioners and salaried workers.

I understand that longtime residents of Greece know the difference, but I wanted to prevent newcomers in need of medical services from traveling out to Spata only to find inexpensive furniture and not an “IKEA hospital.” IKEA does not repair people…or even furniture, for that matter. Some would argue that IKA does not provide the means to properly repair people either, but that’s another story for another time.

IKEA and IKA Web sites

The links I provided to their respective Web sites in this article technically have English versions, though the information contained on them is incomplete.

IKA purports to have their site in several languages, however it’s not quite true. The English, French and German versions have been expanded from one sentence to a few paragraphs with a Word document containing “more information” in Greek, which isn’t very useful since those choosing this option can’t read Greek. The Albanian, Russian, Romanian and Bulgarian versions connect to a one-page PDF in the respective language, and this isn’t nearly enough to cover the basics.

IKEA lists only addresses of their stores Athens and Thessaloniki in English and an online catalog in Greek.

IKEA catalog

There is no English language catalog offered in Greece — my best advice is to ask a friend or look up the names of each item on the IKEA website in the U.S. If you don’t find them listed in the U.S. online catalog, it’s because Greece is a year behind, despite its proximity to Sweden in comparison to America.

When I made a direct inquiry as to why prices in Greece are 30-100% higher in Greece than America, again referencing the proximity issue, IKEA said that each franchise is entitled to set their own prices, either making products more affordable for consumers or making more profit for themselves. Greece obviously made the latter choice.

IKEA delivery in Greece

IKEA offers delivery service to the whole of the mainland and islands through an independent contractor. You can only arrange this after physical checkout at a store, not by phone. The desk is located before the exit, and there is usually someone who speaks English. Delivery can be arranged for Saturday should you work Monday-Friday.

Charges depend on the weight, the number of things you want delivered and location; there is an extra charge for anything more than curbside delivery. A current pricelist is posted on the wall.
